Japan to slash contamination standards in April

General food standards to be lowered to 100 bq per kg for radioactive cesium, one fifth of the current temporary standards.

Baby Food and Milk 50 bq

Drinking Water 10 bq

The Ministry of Health held a briefing on January 16th to explain the new standards near Tokyo.  Hundreds of people showed up including both farmers and crop producers as well as consumers.  The attendees repeatedly asked that the government “Please adhere to proper testing of all foods”.

Some farmers who participated in the briefing spoke out saying that misleading consumers would have no positive benefit.  The Ministry will also hold discussions in Osaka and Fukushima by the end of the month.
