Japan is the first major economy to operate in the modern era without nuclear energy.  The protesters demand that the nation must remain nuclear free, recognizing Fukushima as a wake up call that the world must heed.

A government official equated leaving the nuclear reactors off-line to committing suicide, but the central government’s promises to provide a clear nuclear safety strategy and new energy policies have remained unfulfilled, with little or no progress made due to conflicting interests.
