New governor of Japan’s Yamaguchi Prefecture to freeze construction of Kaminoseki nuclear power plant by Chugoku Electric Power Co

Shigetaro Yamamoto, the newly elected governor of Yamaguchi Prefecture told reporters on Wednesday that he will freeze the planned construction of the Kaminoseki nuclear power plant by Chugoku Electric Power Co until a new energy policy is approved.

The proposed construction site on Nagashima Island, is connected by a bridge to the mainland. Just 3.5 km across the sea from the construction site, rests Iwaishima Island, which has a population of 500 people “who are almost all opposed to the nuclear power plant.”
