2012 Elections have nuclear impact in France – Party proposes closing 24 of 58 reactors by 2025

In an electoral pact with the Green party, Europe Ecologie-Les Verts, France’s Socialists have agreed to phase out a large chunk of the country’s nuclear capacity and guarantee the Greens seats in the next parliament in return for their electoral support.

France would close 24 of 58 nuclear reactors by 2025.

In replacing largely depreciated, long-life assets with less reliable alternatives, the move would deprive state-controlled Electricité de France of a third of its capacity at a cost of nearly EUR2 billion in operating profit.
