Albania Suspends Construction of Nuclear Power Plant Post-Fukushima

Albania has put on hold its plans to build a nuclear power plant in the Shkoder region until all issues concerning its potential impact on the environment and territory are fully resolved, according to its prime minister, Sali Berisha.

Nuclear energy is the cleanest and most economic, but the Fukushima catastrophe dictates a reassessment of the impact in Shkoder,” Berisha told journalists in Podgorica at the end of a talk with Montenegro‘s prime minister, Igor Luksic.

Berisha explained that the region around Lake Skadar, which was envisaged as a site for a nuclear plant, “is susceptible to tectonic changes,” adding that the project would be postponed “until science gives its opinion and solves the existing dilemmas.”
