Just under 700 residents from the Hippo district of Miyagi prefecture have sounded the alarm that they have been unjustly denied full compensation because the government’s basic compensation scheme only covers Fukushima residents, despite the fact that recorded radiation levels in the local area after the onset of the nuclear disaster were greater than those in some areas of Fukushima prefecture, and are demanding equal compensation to the residents of Fukushima prefecture.

The residents from Hippo district have demanded that Tokyo Electric Power Co., pay them an additional 70 million yen ($690,000) in damages stemming from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.
